A winery with excellent wine and a beautiful setting can still fall flat if the person pouring isn't engaged.

A great tasting experience usually has a few things in common:

• Engagement after the pour, not just before it — a presenter who checks back in, not just one who introduces the wine and moves on
• Real conversation, not a script — questions answered on the spot, not recited notes
• Attention to the table — noticing who's curious, who's quiet, and adjusting accordingly

None of this shows up in a winery's marketing or its star rating. It shows up in the room, in real time.
